Captain James

Setting sail to Bouchercon!

As Chairman of the Crime Writers Association, I had the honour (or honor!) of leading a stalwart crew of British crime writers to America's - and hence the world's - biggest crime fiction extravaganza of the year - Bouchercon 2001 in Washington.

What a fantastic festival it was! Among the 1500 people attending was a brave band of splendid British writers - including myself, Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Gwen Moffat, Natasha Cooper, Hilary Bonner, Anne Granger, Elizabeth Corley, Stephen Booth, Priscilla Masters, Jane Jakeman, Joyce Holms, Andrew Taylor, Kate Charles, Laura Wilson, Rebecca Tope and of course, the International Guest of Honour, Peter Lovesey. Apart from our individual panels we came together for a unique "Meet The Brits" session, pulling in over 400 fans, and descending into rapturous cheers and applause. We were made wonderfully welcome - perhaps especially this year - and were able to make and renew invaluable friendships. I loved it so much I've already booked for next year.

Meanwhile, my most recent title in Britain -
PAINTING IN THE DARK
- published by The Do Not Press -
has already been reprinted in both hardback and paperback.
- The book's a mere £7.50 and there are details and reviews on the Painting In The Dark page.
Order one now (please!)

You must order, I'm afraid, because most bookshops don't stock anything other than the "sure-fire" list - which, amazingly, does not include Russell James, even though the hardback is in its third reprint and the paperback in its second. Nevertheless, bookshops do want to sell books, and will be really pleased to order for you.

Can't be bothered?

There's a shortcut to help you order online
on the Painting In The Dark page - but truly -
Booksellers will be delighted to place orders for you (FREE!)
(Just walk in and make their day!)

You can still get last year's
OH NO, NOT MY BABY
also reprinted by the Do Not Press

- The book's a mere £7.50, and there are more details and a shortcut to help you order online on the Oh No, Not My Baby page.

And you can still order
COUNT ME OUT from your bookshop.
COUNT ME OUT has been translated into French this year. (See below.)

- Details on
the Count Me Out page.

If you'd prefer not to order online, then why not
S t r e t c h your legs (and your imagination!)
by walking down to your local bookshop? They'd love to see you.

Other News:

French Book Cover

The French translation of COUNT ME OUT is now out in France, under the title MAUVAIS COUPS (which roughly translates as Hard Knocks. This is a first rate translation by the excellent Jean-Francois Le Ruyet, and the book is published by L'Atalante.

I'm still asked occasionally about my novels published in German:

Series Editor, Martin Compart, well-known in both the publishing and film world, put together a list to die for. Attractively formatted, with stunning dark covers.

UNDERGROUND was released first
PAYBACK followed in June 1999
SLAUGHTER MUSIC in late 1999
but COUNT ME OUT, although bought and paid for, fell foul of a decision within Dumont to cut short the overall series. The book may come out in Germany one day, but meanwhile, you'll have to read the book in either French or English.
